Kamaru Usman reacts to Ben Askren losing to Jordan Burroughs

By Tom Taylor - May 7, 2019

On Monday night, UFC welterweight contender Ben Askren stepped onto the mats for a wrestling match with Jordan Burroughs. The bout topped the Beat the Streets 2019 charity event, which emanated the Hulu Theatre inside New York City’s hallowed Madison Square Garden.

In the end, this charity wrestling match did not go well for Askren. The former ONE and Bellator champ was shut out by Burroughs, who won 11-0.

Unsurprisingly, Askren’s tough night on the mats provided some ammunition for his rivals in the UFC welterweight division — including the reigning champion Kamaru Usman.

Usman’s first reaction to Askren’s loss used nothing more than emojis, but certainly got the point across.

His second was a little more verbose, scolding Ben Askren for his trash talk, and congratulating Burroughs on his victory.

“When shit talking goes wrong… good thing that was just a wrestling match. great job as always @alliseeisgoldgreat show #BTSNY” – Kamaru Usman on Twitter

Ben Askren and Kamaru Usman have exchanged plenty of trash talk over the last few months, particularly in the buildup to UFC 235, where they picked up victories over Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley respectively. In fact, the pair even had to be separated backstage at a UFC 235 pre-fight press conference.

At present, Usman is expected to defend his title against Colby Covington in the near future. Askren, meanwhile, is set to return to the cage at UFC 239, where he’ll battle Jorge Masvidal. Depending on how these bouts unfold, we could very well see the two wrestling specialists in the Octagon together later this year.
