UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has found himself in hot water after making controversial comments about female fighters at an event in Saudi Arabia.

At this event, the champion was asked what advice he has for up-and-coming female fighters. Here’s how he responded:

“For females, I have very good advice, be fighters at home,” Nurmagomedov said (transcript via The Independent).

“And one more advice, all the time, finish your husband,” he added.

While it’s possible this comment from Khabib Nurmagomedov was intended as a joke, it has not been well-received on social media. All over Twitter, fans have criticized the champion for this comment.

Khabib Nurmagomedov last fought on October 6, in the main event of the blockbuster UFC 229 pay-per-view, when he submitted his arch rival Conor McGregor in the fourth round, successfully defending his belt in the process.

With this victory, the champion improved to jaw-dropping 27-0 overall, easily one of the best records in MMA.

At present, Nurmagomedov is awaiting punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, having been involved in an ugly-post fight brawl with McGregor’s team after the pair’s UFC 229 fight.

Once that situation is squared away, the undefeated champion can turn his attention to his next fight. While he has repeatedly called for a boxing match with undefeated legend Floyd Mayweather Jr., UFC President Dana White has assured that Nurmagomedov is likely to battle his long-time rival Tony Ferguson next.

“Don’t pay attention to [those rumors of a Mayweather fight],” White told ESPN recently. “First of all, the Mayweather team has not approached us at all. Khabib is under contract with the UFC; we haven’t talked to anybody from the Mayweather team. Floyd is very good at getting his name back out there when he’s ready to.”

“As a fight fan, you’ve got to go with Tony,” he added “Tony had the belt, tweaked his knee, got stripped, this fight happens — Tony never lost the [interim] belt in a fight. Neither did Conor, but Conor got the opportunity to actually fight [Nurmagomedov]. I think Tony deserves the next shot.”
