Khabib Nurmagomedov fires back at Conor McGregor, rips NSAC's proposed anti-bullying PSA

Earlier this week, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) handed hefty punishments to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor for their roles in the frenzied brawl that followed their UFC 229 fight. Nurmagomedov was handed a $500,000 fine and a nine-month ban, which can be reduced to six months if he completes an anti-bullying PSA. McGregor, meanwhile, received a lighter six-month suspension and $50,000 fine.

This weekend, in the co-main event of UFC Fortaleza on ESPN+, former featherweight champ Jose Aldo will battle surging contender Renato Moicano. Speaking at Thursday’s UFC Fortaleza media day, Jose Aldo harkened back to late 2018, when he was briefly linked to a lightweight fight with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Aldo was excited about this fight, but now that Cerrone is chasing a fight with Conor McGregor, he no longer sees it as an option.

Until very recently, former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm was expected to fight Aspen Ladd at UFC 235 on March 2. Then, at last night’s UFC 235 press conference, UFC President Dana White casually dropped the news that Holm would not be competing on the card after all. In the wake of this news, many members of the MMA community guessed that Holly Holm could be reallocated to a title fight with Amanda Nunes, who currently owns the UFC bantamweight and featherweight belts. Brazilian publication Combate is reporting that this is indeed the case.

Speaking on ESPN’s Now or Never earlier this week, UFC President Dana White stated that the time for a rematch between UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier is ‘now.’ “Now,” White said bluntly of a rematch between the two arch rivals. “Yeah. I think that right now, Cormier probably has three fights left in his career, you know what I mean? And one of those guys is definitely going to be Jon Jones.”

While this high-stakes welterweight scrap is just a month away, much of Askren’s focus seems to be on a fight with undefeated UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, who he hopes to meet in the inaugural title fight for the still hypothetical 165-pound division. However this fight unfolds, retirement is looking like a more and more imminent possibility for the 41-year-old Brazilian grappler.
