UFC Ottawa | Al Iaquinta now has ‘good working relationship’ with the UFC

By Tom Taylor - May 2, 2019

Al Iaquinta has not always seen eye-to-eye with the UFC brass. In fact, there have been times in the past when the lightweight contender has publicly butted heads with the executives who run the promotion.

Today, as Iaquinta gears up for his UFC Ottawa main event showdown with Donald Cerrone, he says his relationship with the UFC is much better.

“I’m definitely just happier I think in general,” Iaquinta told MMANews recently. “I’ve got a good rapport with Hunter Campbell and Sean Shelby. I went out to the Performance Institute and got some great training out there. I met with those guys, my father came out and we had a nice dinner together.

“We understand each other a lot better now and I think they understand my gripes and I think they’re doing their best to make me happy. I know what they expect out of me and I’m doing my best to make them happy. It’s a good working relationship.”

Al Iaquinta will enter his UFC Ottawa duel with the man they call “Cowboy” with a big win over Kevin Lee in the rear-view. In his next most recent fight, he came up short in a short-notice battle with reigning UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov. This loss to the undefeated Russian was the only setback he’s experienced in his last 7 fights.

If he’s able to defeat Cowboy at UFC Ottawa Ottawa, Iaquinta might just earn himself a fight with the winner of Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier’s upcoming title fight — especially now that his relationship with the UFC has improved.
