Last night, on the main card of UFC on Fox 22, MMA legend Urijah Faber competed in the final bout of his long and illustrious career. He did so in his hometown of Sacramento, California, against English bantamweight Brad Pickett. Faber was able to dominate his English foe to a unanimous decision win for a successful swan song. At the event’s post fight press conference, Faber weighed in on his final fight. The legend explained that he’s happy he was able to keep it together throughout this emotional experience – especially given the tear-jerking pre-fight promo the UFC aired in the moments before his fight.

Faber dominated the fight from the beginning, dropping Pickett in the first round before proceeding to out-strike and out-grapple Pickett over the course of the remaining two rounds.

Ahead of the fight, the MMA community has continued to reflect on Faber’s iconic career, which dates back thirteen years. While Faber’s professional career goes back thirteen years, his rivalry with Dominick Cruz goes back nearly ten years, to a time when Faber reigned as the WEC featherweight champion. Faber defeated Cruz in the pair’s first meeting, however it was Cruz who won the next two fights, with the most recent one being a dominant unanimous decision win over Faber at UFC 199 in June.

He will do so against England’s Brad Pickett on the main card of UFC on Fox 22, which will emanate from his hometown of Sacramento, California. With his fighting career in the rear-view, Faber will shift his focus to managing Team Alpha Male, the world-famous gym he founded in his hometown. Though these duties will surely keep him plenty busy in his post-fighting life, Faber recently explained on UFC Tonight that he’s not willing to entirely rule out a return to competition down the road.

At UFC 207 on December 30th, UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz will put his bantamweight strap on the line in the co-main event of the New Years Eve card as he steps into the Octagon against streaking undefeated bantamweight Cody Garbrandt. Garbrandt, who will be entering the bout on a 10-fight win streak that has seen him go 5-0 in the UFC, finishing all but one of his opponents as he has climbed to the #5 spot on the UFC’s official bantamweight rankings. While there’s no denying Garbrandt is one of the most impressive bantamweights on the UFC roster right now, former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw was campaigning for a title shot before the UFC announced Garbrandt as the next contender, even going as far as to attempt to bet Cruz $100,000 on the fight.

This Faber swan song will occur on December 17 in Sacremento, California – the home of his renowned gym, Team Alpha Male. “I’ve been kind of waiting for this,” Faber said to host Ariel Helwani on the show. “This is actually going to be my last fight. And it just feels right to do it in [Sacramento] in this new arena. It just feels like the right time and the right place. I’ve been waiting for this new arena to be built, I was waiting for that Dominick Cruz opportunity, and I feel like this is going to be an epic event and I can’t wait to do it in front of the people I love.”

On the main card of UFC 203, Jimmie Rivera earned a unanimous decision win over Urijah Faber, becoming the first bantamweight to defeat the long-time contender in a three-round, non-title fight. The decision win goes down as the biggest of the 27-year-old prospect’s career, and is likely to have earned him a spot deep inside the bantamweight division’s top-10 rankings. Unfortunately, Rivera did not escape the encounter unscathed. In the third round of the fight, the Puerto Rican fighter found himself on the receiving end of a nasty eye-poke, which forced a momentary break in the action. And though he was ultimately able to continue fighting to the final bell, Rivera has since revealed the extent of the damage caused by Faber’s eye-poke.

The Diaz brothers and Urijah Faber both hail from Northern California and have been veterans in the sport of mixed martial arts for quite some time. While the California natives train at different gyms, they have been supportive of each other and it shows with Faber’s recent Instagram post of him wearing a Nick Diaz shirt with his infamous pose that he struck lying on the ground during his fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 183 back in 2015.

The fight will be Faber’s first since his lopsided unanimous decision loss at the hands of bantamweight kingpin Dominick Cruz earlier this year at UFC 199. Following the loss, Faber was noncommittal about taking another fight, however it wasn’t long before ‘The California Kid’ signed on to fight #12 ranked Jimmie Rivera, who is on an 18-fight win streak, and has gone 3-0 in the UFC.

Less than a month after the bout however, it was announced that Faber would be returning to the Octagon at UFC 203 on September 10th to fight Jimmie Rivera. Despite being 0-4 in title fights in the UFC, Faber is confident that he can earn another title shot inside the Octagon.
