Edson Barboza Isn't Worried About Khabib Not Showing Up for UFC 219

Justin Golightly - October 28, 2017

While we’ve been waiting along with Khabib Nurmagomedov on the sidelines for an announcement, we got our wish yesterday. A fight with Edson Barboza was made official to fight at UFC 219. This is a time for celebration, but fans and media can’t help but have painful flashbacks to the fights Nurmagomedov has had to pull out of. For most of 2016, we were hyped Tony Ferguson would fight Khabib, but it never materialized. Barboza isn’t worried about all that though, he’s just happy to finally fight one of the best in the world. “Khabib [Nurmagomedov] is a great fighter. He’s a true fighter. I knew if this contract comes on his head, he’s signing. This is an opportunity to have the two best lightweights in the world fighting. He definitely want the best and is one of the best and it makes me very excited for this fight. Definitely not [worried about Nurmagomedov not showing up]. I know Injuries happen all the time. I never fight 100% in my body in my life. Always every fighter have some injuries. Maybe I can get hurt in my camp. This happens to everybody and I’m not scared about this. […] He train so hard. I think for sure he train very hard. Sometimes it happens. I can’t do nothing. If you don’t train, you not get hurt. But me I train hard all the time, he trains hard all the time. I hope it doesn’t happen with me and him.”

VIDEO | Fighter Breaks Down During UFC Sao Paulo Weigh-Ins

Justin Golightly - October 27, 2017

Just yesterday, there was a report of Georges St-Pierre saying that the UFC’s new early weigh-in policy is having the opposite affect of its original intentions. He even went on to say that it was the ‘worst thing they could do.’ Well, you know what they say, speak of the devil and he shall appear. Just this morning, Deiveson Figueiredo seemed to be going through an absolutely brutal cut. This was evident as he started weeping throughout the entire procedure.  How difficult is the fight before the fight? Deiveson Figueiredo made it painfully evident.

Holloway miraculously knocked off each and every contender that the UFC put in front of him, until he was no longer denied a shot at a belt. Now that he’s dethroned the former featherweight king Jose Aldo, he can reap the benefits of being a UFC champion. With his newfound fame and cash flow, he decided to bless his mom with a new truck. Justin Golightly - October 26, 2017

The warrior spirit is forever tethered to Josh Barnett and his brutal Spotify playlist. If this was any other time or era, he would still be running full speed into battle. Whether he’s doing it physically, or by putting down a Lord of the Void in Magic: The Gathering, Barnett always finds time for violence. It’s just who he is. Let’s take his Summer vacation, for instance. While you were probably out at the beach, Josh Barnett was preparing a group of Vikings in Sweden for conquest. Your consequences were a hangover and a sunburn; their consequences were death. KLONK! @JoshLBarnett @TheGrimfrost #viking #Vikingatheart pic.twitter.com/D5r4oX6Lsb

Russell Ess - October 26, 2017

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida is set to return to competition after over two years since last fighting in the Octagon. Machida is coming off an 18-month suspension after admitting the use of the banned substance 7-Keto-DHEA. Machida claimed that he did not know that the pills he bought over the counter contained anything on the banned substance list. With a return to the Octagon set for UFC Fight Night 119 on October 28 in Sao Paulo, Brazil against Derek Brunson, Machida was pumped up during their staredown on Thursday. After the two faced each other in front of the media, Machida and Brunson turned to the audience and Machida let out a big yell that shocked some in attendance.

If there was any truth to Floyd Mayweather saying that his fight with Conor McGregor would be his last, International Boxing Hall of Fame anchor Jim Lampley isn’t believing it for a second. We recently saw Mayweather post a couple of training videos to social media and the speculation has been going around on if there was any meaning behind them.

Russell Ess - October 24, 2017

Georges St-Pierre is returning to compete in the Octagon after taking a nearly four-year hiatus from the sport. GSP will go up to the middleweight division for the first time in his career to take on Michael Bisping at UFC 217 on November 4 for Bisping’s UFC middleweight title. Given that “Rush” said he is returning to compete in MMA because he wanted fights that would excite him and get him motivated, it is hard to imagine a matchup against the trash-talking Irish UFC lightweight champion would not get him excited. St-Pierre spoke with Sports Illustrated recently and was asked if he has plans of fighting Conor McGregor in the future.

Donald Cerrone returns to the Octagon for his third fight this year as he is set to take on rising star Darren Till in the main event of UFC Fight Night 118 in Gdansk, Poland. “Cowboy” is riding the first two-fight winning streak of his professional MMA career after fighting two world-class opponents. In January, Cerrone lost for the first time since moving up to the welterweight division to current number 4 ranked UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal. Cerrone’s next matchup in July would not get any easier with falling short in a unanimous decision loss to former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, who is currently the number 1 ranked 170-pound contender.

All fighters came in under the allowed limit of their contracted weight with the exception of one fighter. Veteran Sam Alvey stepped on the scales with an official weight of 189, which was three pounds over for his non-title middleweight bout. The speculation and suspense of waiting for Conor McGregor to decide just what he wants to and who he wants to fight is almost as exciting as the fight itself. Disagree or not, it’s definitely become at least intertwined in what we’ve expected in a post-Aldo knockout world. MMA, boxing or just gallivanting around in yachts, McGregor can just do whatever he wants. Wrestling legend Jim Ross thinks that sooner or later, he’ll end up in the pro-wrestling business, courtesy of a huge WWE deal by Vince McMahon. .@JRsBBQ on Conor McGregor and WWE pic.twitter.com/V4Ki2xU0rQ

Justin Golightly - October 19, 2017

Just a couple of days after his UFC release, flyweight Ian McCall signed on with Japanese fighting organization RIZIN. He recently spoke in-depth to us about him jumping ship to the promotion, which is enjoying a meteoric rise from the ashes of Pride. He’ll be competing in the electric bantamweight grand prix and has his eyes on former UFC fighter Kyoji Horiguchi. Before McCall can get to him though, he’ll have to get through Manel Kape though. His potential remains somewhat of a mystery besides his first round finish of Erson Yamamoto last weekend, but right now it’s his mouth that’s running amok. “Well, I was finally healthy and I just felt like leaving the UFC and where else would I go besides here? There’s no where else I’d rather be. That’s why I’m here. I’m excited to hear about this grand prix and excited to fight these sort of fighters. It’s a good, talented group of people so I’m excited to be here. But specifically you [Kyoji Horiguchi]. I’m coming for you. Everybody else wants you, I want you too. We should have fought in the UFC and he’s very accomplished. He’s very good and I think that he’s got the most steam behind everybody because he’s the best.” — Ian McCall at the RIZIN press conference.

Demetrious Johnson is coming off a historic win with his 11th consecutive title defense. In doing so, “Mighty Mouse” surpassed Anderson Silva’s record for the most consecutive title defenses and could continue to add to it still being the active UFC flyweight champion. Not only did Johnson pull off the win and set the new record at UFC 216, but “Mighty Mouse” did it with pizzazz by pulling off a finishing move that many have never seen before. Johnson used a suplex to armbar sequence in the fifth round that had everyone in awe.

Justin Golightly - October 18, 2017

Early in the afternoon on Saturday, there is going to be a wild fight going down in Poland and the only place you can watch it is on UFC Fight Pass. Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone will throw down with up-and-comer Darren Till in the main event. You’d think a name like Cerrone would want to be on pay-per-view somewhere, or the curtain-jerker on a big UFC on FOX card, but he couldn’t care less. He wants anyone who doesn’t have Fight Pass to shell out the nine bucks because the Cowboy is fighting and that’s just must-see TV. “I want the UFC to post, ‘Cowboy in Poland [on] Fight Pass’ and people say, ‘What the f-ck is Fight Pass? I gotta’ figure out what Fight Pass is. How do we watch this fight?’ That’s what I want. I want you guys to come on and have the biggest draw in the Fight Pass history. Right? Because people gotta’ figure out how they’re going to watch the Cowboy fight because theyk now the son of a b-tch is going in there, biting down, and giving it all. Win or lose, I just want people to know he fights with everything he’s got.”

In combat sports, press conference and weigh in staredowns are typically an opportunity for two fighters to squeeze in some last-minute bravado, trash talk, and maybe even a little shoving. But hey, that’s just what typically happens. This is decidedly not how things went down during a press conference for a boxing match between Norwegian unified welterweight world champ Cecilia Braekhus and Swedish challenger Mikaela Lauren earlier this week. When the pair engaged in their press conference staredown, Sweden’s Lauren moved in and stole a quick kiss.

Justin Golightly - October 17, 2017

Rory MacDonald has moved on from the UFC and has set his sites on Bellator gold. In January, he’ll take on their welterweight champion Douglas Lima in January. Both fighters sat down and were asked questions ahead of their encounter about a wide variety of subjects. Asking fighters about what they’d do during a zombie apocalypse is a welcome change from the same questions they get every week. One MMA subject they talked about were which strikes they would make legal blows in the cage. “I think I would allow every elbow. Like, every type the way you throw. I think that would be a good thing. Because if you’re throwing like this or like this I don’t think it changes anything. So, elbows should be legal however you throw it — from up, down — I don’t think it changes anything.” — Douglas Lima to MMA Fighting.
