Canelo Alvarez delivered what many fans and analysts predicted last night, a knockout victory over Liam Smith, thus adding another world title to his already impressive resume.
Canelo was able to utilize his jab to outpoint Smith in the opening rounds. Alvarez would frustrate Liam with the snapping punch and then follow up with some brutal hooks to the body.
In the seventh-round, Alvarez scored his first knockdown of the night. He clipped Smith with a hook to the head and Liam promptly dropped to the canvas. To his credit, Smith would get right back up to his feet but the writing was on the wall that this was not going to be his night.
Alvarez would drop Smith again in round eight, this after he landed a brutal body shot. Once again Liam would showcase his toughness by getting back to his feet but it was clear that the title fight would soon be coming to an end.
In round nine Canelo delivered another bone-crushing body shot that dropped Smith and this time the referee jumped in to call a stop to the contest.
With the victory, Canelo Alvarez became the 154-pound Junior Middleweight Champion.
In his post-fight speech, Canelo was asked to comment on a potential bout with “GGG” Gennady Golovkin. “I fear no one!” Canelo stated. He later added that he had offered Golovkin a fight but “GGG” had turned it down.
