To kick off 2017, Belfort stepped into the Octagon with Kelvin Gastelum in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night: Fortaleza’, where he dropped a 1st round TKO to the streaking contender. Following his fight with Gastelum, Belfort confirmed that his next fight would indeed be his last.

Shortly thereafter, Belfort generated headlines by suggesting he’d like his retirement fight to be against former WWE star CM Punk – a welterweight with almost no martial arts experience, and a 0-1 professional MMA record. Unsurprisingly, this callout generated some negative responses from the MMA community – including one from notoriously outspoken middleweight champ Michael Bisping.
