While Vitor Belfort awaits payment, Dana White claims he turned down two replacement opponents
If things had gone according to plan, MMA legend Vitor Belfort would have fought the last fight of his career opposite Uriah Hall in the co-main event of last night’s UFC St. Louis card. Regrettably, Hall was hospitalized as the result of a botched weight cut, which nixed Belfort’s retirement plans.
While Belfort didn’t get to fight, he did show up in St. Louis and make weight. As such, he’s hoping to be paid for his efforts.
“Now a message to [UFC],” Vitor Belfort said in the last line of a lengthy Instagram post in his native Portuguese. “I’m waiting for my [payment, UFC]. After all, I did what I had to do. I trained, I was present in the week of the fight, I hit my weight … Where’s the respect!?”
While Belfort believes he should be paid, UFC President Dana White seems to be more concerned with the fact that the Brazilian legend turned down two replacement opponents when Hall pulled out: one for last night’s St. Louis card, and one for this weekend’s UFC 220 card in Boston.
“This thing went down, we worked quickly and we got Vitor a fight,” White said on the Fs1 post-fight show (h/t MMAFighting). “He could have fought tonight, he chose not to. We got him a fight in Boston. He chose not to fight in Boston. He chose not to fight then. I don’t know who the opponents were, but they told him we got him two fights.”
Do you think the UFC should pay Vitor Belfort? Conversely, do you think Belfort should have accepted one of the replacement fights he was offered?
