Jake Shields: It Would Be Justice If I Hurt Rousimar Palhares
Rousimar Palhares made his way to the top of the World Series of Fighting welterweight division by making his opponents scream in agony before tapping out, and Jake Shields is hoping to give the champion a taste of his own medicine when they meet at “WSOF 22″.
Shields is usually not one to trash talk, but he has taken a serious dislike to Palhares’ character and intends to teach him a lesson in their championship bout. “I usually feel really guilty if I hurt most guys,” Shields told BJPENN.COM Radio. “Obviously I would still do it because it’s a fight, but I would still feel guilty about it. This guy, I would feel like it was justice.”
Palhares has a history of holding on to his submissions for too long, causing his opponents serious injury. His lack of discipline became such an issue that it ultimately cost him his job in the UFC as he received multiple warnings to let go of his holds sooner by officials.
While it is obvious Palhares’ power aids him in making his opponents pain, Shields refuses to dismiss the WSOF Welterweight Champion’s technical skill.
“He is a technical fighter as well. He muscles things, but I don’t want to take away from his technical aspect,” Shields said. “I don’t care for the guy, but his jiu-jitsu is really talented as well technically. Not just power… I think my jiu-jitsu is better overall. He’s got great leg locks, great tricks. Overall, I have more tools and more variety.”
