Yoel Romero hoping to fight Anderson Silva at UFC Brooklyn
After the UFC attempted once again to set up Yoel Romero vs Paulo Costa, it fell through and now Romero wants to face Anderson “The Spider” Silva.
According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, the UFC was planning to book Romero vs Costa as the main event of the UFC’s first event on ESPN+ which will take place on January 19 in Brooklyn, New York.
However, due to an injury to Costa, he will be unable to compete at that date but still hopes for his next fight to come against the “Soldier of God”. The two were first rumored to meet at UFC 230.
Romero, on the other hand, is hoping to still get onto that inaugural ESPN card and hopes that he can take on the former UFC middleweight king in Silva.
Interestingly enough, Silva has recently stated that he will be making his return to action in January which would make this all too perfect for the MMA legend.
The 43-year old Brazilian’s last fight came in February 2017 when he earned a lackluster and controversial unanimous decision victory over Derek Brunson. The win was Silva’s first in five years.
As for Romero, his last three outings have all been in UFC title fights. The first coming against the now champion Robert Whittaker for the interim title. Whittaker would win the fight by unanimous decision and eventually be promoted to undisputed champion after Georges St-Pierre vacated that title.
Following the loss, Romero would look to fight for another interim crown as he stepped in for Whittaker against former champion Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 after Whittaker suffered a very bad staph infection. However, due to Romero missing weight for the bout, he became eligible to win the belt. He would win via third-round knockout.
And most recently Romero took on Whittaker in a rematch at UFC 225 that was set to be a title fight before Romero missed weight once more. Whittaker took the nod once again, this time by split decision, in an absolute classic.
