Canelo Alvarez ready to fight Gennady Golovkin ‘right now’

Canelo Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) has little time to bask in the glory of winning the WBC middleweight 160 lb. championship title. According to Bloody Elbow, the new champion has just 15 days to make a deal to fight interim champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs), or risk being stripped of the title that he took home on Saturday night.

According to Canelo, he is ready for the fight with Golovkin. Max Kellerman interviewed the new champ after the fight on the potential super fight (transcribed by Bloody Elbow):

“If you want me to fight him right now, put the gloves on and I’ll fight him right now,” Alvarez said (through his interpreter). “I respect he’s a great champion, but right now I’ll put the gloves on against him.”

Canelo has a slightly different tone from the post-fight press conference where he said that “GGG is a great fighter, and he is my friend. I have respect for him, but if we do fight it’s going to be at my weight class. I’m the champion, I don’t have to do what he wants.”

As negotiations unfold, we will see if the two stars will be able to accept the terms coming from both camps, but the countdown for 15 days to come to an agreement is winding down for Canelo to keep his new belt.
