Lyoto Machida vs. Phil Davis 2 added to Bellator event on September 11

A rematch between light heavyweights Lyoto Machida and Phil Davis has been set for an upcoming Bellator event that takes place on September 11. Combate was the first to report the rematch between Machida and Davis and confirmed it will be the main event for the Bellator event. The fight will be set for three rounds as Bellator does not do non-title five-round fights as the UFC does. Bellator is returning to action next week after having missed the last five months due to the coronavirus pandemic and the promotion has been busy announcing fights for its return to television screens.

Ryan Bader was expected to defend his light heavyweight title on May 9 against Russian contender, Vadim Nemkov. The main event of Bellator 228 saw long-time veterans Gegard Mousasi and Lyoto Machida rematch five years after meeting for the first time in the UFC. Machida won that fight via unanimous decision, and now five years later Mousasi has a victory in the series as he edged out a split decision over Machida in the rematch. When Lyoto Machida still called the UFC home, the promotion made it very much worth his while to finish fights. Now un-redacted documents being used in the UFC Anti-Trust Lawsuit have revealed that Machida was given a hefty $100,000 bonus when he scored a knockout, TKO or submission win — seemingly in addition to any Performance of the Night bonuses he might have received. It’s not clear whether this arrangement lasted for the duration of his UFC career, or just for a portion of it.

Lyoto Machida and Gegard Mousasi are set to run it back at Bellator 228 on September 28, Bellator announced. The two fought back at UFC Fight Night 36 in February 2014. There, they were the fight of the night but it was Machida who did enough as he edged out a unanimous decision. Since then, the Brazilian went on to fight for the UFC middleweight title again, but lost and then headed to Bellator after a 3-4 record following the Mousasi fight.
