Volkan Oezdemir opens up on loss to Anthony Smith: 'I guess I wasn't ready for a fight'

On Saturday night, in the main event of UFC Moncton, Switzerland’s Volkan Oezdemir attempted to rebound from a failed title bid to Daniel Cormier with a win over streaking contender Anthony Smith. Unfortunately for Oezdemir, this mission didn’t go as planned. Instead, he was submitted by his foe in the third round. Post-fight Volkan Oezdemir discussed his loss to Anthony Smith. While the Swiss knockout artist was careful not to take away from Smith’s victory, he say he had a little bit of trouble due to a lingering nose injury.

On Saturday night, in the main event of UFC Moncton, streaking light heavyweight contender Anthony Smith picked up arguably the biggest win of his career so far, submitting former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Volkan Oezdemir in the third round of a fun scrap. With this victory, Smith established himself as one of the very top contenders in the UFC light heavyweight division, and a frontrunner for the winner of Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson’s UFC 232 title fight.

Jon Jones will make his highly anticipated return to the octagon at December’s UFC 232 event in Las Vegas where he will rematch Alexander Gustafsson for the promotions light heavyweight title. “Bones” has not competed since UFC 214 in August of 2017, when he defeated current promotional “champ champ” Daniel Cormier via knockout.

In the co-headliner of tonight’s UFC Moncton event, featherweights Artem Lobov and Michael Johnson collided in hopes of moving up the 145-pound ranks. “The Russian Hammer” was initially slated to face Khabib Nurmagomedov’s teammate Zubaira Tukhugov (18-4 MMA) at UFC Moncton. However, the promotion pulled Tukhugov off of the fight card shortly following the Russians involvement in UFC 229’s now infamous post fight brawl.

It is officially a done deal! Former ONE Champion and Bellator welterweight title holder Ben Askren has joined the UFC roster. A historic trade involving ONE Championship sending Ben Askren to the UFC in exchange for former flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson was confirmed by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.
