Nick Diaz’s Legal Team Aren’t Finished, Plan To Fight 5 Year Suspension

Nick Diaz was handed a highly controversial suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Monday. They gave him a five year suspension and fined him $165,000 for his failed drug test from UFC 183.

Anderson Silva, who was Diaz’s opponent for UFC 183, also failed his drug tests, except his tested positive for steroids. He received a one year suspension from the commission.

It seemed hard to find anyone that was in support of the suspension. Fighters, fans and media took to social media to express their feelings, which weren’t all that positive.

Diaz’s legal team spoke with media after the hearing and said that following this they will file an appeal for judicial review, citing that the ruling was not based on fact or reason.

Here’s what they told MMAJunkie:

“We’re confident that they’ll see the errors of the commission’s ways. You really have a bigger problem here. There are no standard protocols that these athletes are tested for drugs, which every athlete that’s subject to the commission should be extremely worried about that, because you’re going to get inconsistent results.

“Any drug testing program in this country has standards of protocol. Go online and try to find the commission’s protocol’s. There are none. And when they do use a WADA-accredited lab, they don’t want to rely on that. So it’s very scary that there’s no review process for these athletes, that there’s no consistent protocol, and that they can be fined and lose their livelihood without any due process of law.”
