B.J. Penn Receives License to Fight Frankie Edgar Pending Review of Cataract Surgery

By Chris Taylor - June 18, 2014

Former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion B.J. Penn (16-9-2 MMA, 12-5-1 UFC) received a license on Tuesday for his “TUF 19 Finale” fight with Frankie Edgar, pending a review of his surgically repaired eye.

“The Prodigy” applied for licensure with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the panel approved the license on the condition that the government agency’s physician confer with a local expert who has knowledge of conditions similar to Penn’s.

Penn underwent surgery in February of 2013 to repair a damaged eye suffering from cataracts.

Pending the final approval with the local physician, Penn will meet Edgar for a third time in the headlining bout of the “TUF 19 Finale,” which goes down July 6 live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
