Cain Velasquez’s camp confused by broken jaw report

The camp of UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez (13-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC), is more than a bit confused as to why the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation’s Combative Sports division medically suspended the fighter for a suspected broken jaw following this past weekend’s UFC 166 event.

Heidi Seibert, who is a spokesperson for Zinkin Entertainment, today told MMAjunkie.com the following:

“The thing is totally fine, and it was totally fine,” said Seibert. “He hasn’t seen a doctor or anything.”

As for the reasoning to why Velasquez has not yet seen a doctor, Seibert replied:

“He didn’t feel there was a need to see one.”

Cain dominated former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 166, on route to winning their trilogy bout by way of fifth-round TKO. Velasquez left the Toyota Center that evening looking relatively unscathed by the title contest.

However, on Monday, the Texas commission then released a list of UFC 166 medical suspensions and Velasquez was issued a lengthy six-month suspension due to a “possible broken jaw.”

That was news to Velasquez and his camp, who have since denied the rumor:

“He’s at the park with his family,” Seibert said. “He’s been eating whatever he wants. He’s fine.”

Seibert stated that Velasquez had received a few stitches on his nose immediately after the bout, visited the post-fight press conference to answer questions about his dominant victory, and then hopped into an awaiting car that took him to his after-party. A potential jaw injury was never discussed.

“He was at the after-party by 1:30 in the morning, feeling fine” Seibert said. ” … So we have no idea where it came from.”

In other words, barring a surprise and painless broken jaw that has somehow gone undetected by the baddest man on the planet, don’t expect Velasquez to be out of action for the full six months.
