Chael Sonnen’s gives his take on Anderson Silva’s ‘silly’ defense
Anderson Silva’s hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission has come and gone and it was as bizarre as it could have been. Regardless of what hit Salt-N-Pepa songs played during the conference call, the verdict is in and “The Spider” is officially suspended for a calendar year from his failed drug test.
Silva claimed a tainted sexual performance medication caused his pre-fight drug test for UFC 183 to come back positive, but the commission was not buying it. ESPN analyst Chael Sonnen threw in his two cents on the former champion’s defense:
“Guys who dig their heels in and come out and deny and lie and refuse to admit the findings of the test have always been treated more harshly,” said Sonnen. “In Anderson’s case, he went down swinging all the way to the end… The defense was very silly and ridiculous.”
Sonnen doesn’t think that Silva’s case was the most confusing part, however. “I’m just not sure why he thought he needed to put it up there,” Sonnen said. “These tests are bulletproof. It was found in his system and that’s the end of it. The reason why it was in his system is simply irrelevant. Guys that end up in this spot— and I’m one of those guys, I can tell you from firsthand experience— like to make a big case and a big show about why it was in their system. But look guys, it’s pass-fail. You took and you competed. You’re in violation.”
“He didn’t need to touch on five different dimensions and insult everyone’s intelligence. Just tell everybody, ‘Yeah, I did it.'”
Sonnen is no stranger to calling Silva out on his bluffs, as he did it several times in the months leading up to their fights at UFC 117 and UFC 148. “The Spider” would win both contests, but Sonnen has hinted toward a THIRD match between the two.
