Cody McKenzie Calls Out Josh Thompson After UFC 159 Win

By bjpenndotcom - May 3, 2013

In a surprising move, current UFC featherweight Cody McKenzie has called out top lightweight contender Josh Thompson after McKenzie’s recent win at UFC 159. Cody has had mixed success in the organization, with his most recent outing a decision win over Leonard Garcia (1-5 in UFC).

Evidently, McKenzie feels his accomplishments in the sport warrant a fight against Josh Thompson. Let’s take a moment to look at the careers of both men, and you decide if this match-up makes sense.

Josh Thompson (20-5, 3-1 UFC) recently made his return to the Octagon with a Knockout Of The Night performance against former lightweight number one contender Nate Diaz. He holds notable career victories over Gilbert Melendez, Pat Healy, and K.J. Noons. He is a former Strikeforce lightweight Champion.

Cody McKenzie (14-3, 3-3 UFC) has three wins in the Octagon against the likes of Leonard Garcia, Marcus LeVesseur, and Aaron Wilkinson. These three have a combined UFC record of 2-8. After splitting his first four appearances in the Octagon with two wins and two losses, McKenzie decided to make the drop from lightweight to featherweight. His first fight in the division was a first-round body punch TKO loss to Chad Mendes.

While this fight is not likely to happen based on the current standing of each fighter, all is not lost from McKenzie’s rant. We can at least gather that he is considering a move back to the lightweight division.

And in case you were wondering what Cody has to say to those thinking he is in over his head:
