“Cowboy” on Reebok deal: ‘If I say something, you will see me fighting in Bellator next week’
Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone has never been one to hold back his feelings on a controversial topic, but he was almost forced to when asked about the UFC’s partnership with Reebok.
When Reebok was announced as the official sponsor of the octagon in December 2014, fans and fighters alike were cautious to celebrate the deal. Once details surrounding the payouts and restrictions of wearing anything but Reebok gear to the octagon, fighters were quick to voice their disproval on social media. UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub mentioned that it doesn’t make sense for him financially to step into the octagon anymore now that the Reebok deal has taken effect.
Cerrone mentioned months ago that he would be losing at least $60K per fight due to the Reebok deal, and has spoken out on the topic once again in a recent edition of “Inside MMA“.
“That’s a touchy subject. If I say something, you will see ‘Cowboy’ fighting in Bellator next week. Yeah, the Reebok deal is definitely hurting everybody. All the big corporate sponsors I have are sticking with me, thank god… This is my first fight with the Reebok deal and all my sponsors said they’re sticking by so we’ll see. I’m proud to sit right here and enjoy a full bodied Budweiser.”
Should it concern the UFC that their challenger to the UFC Lightweight Title doesn’t like the Reebok deal? Is Cerrone overreacting? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
