Daniel Cormier ready to play ‘guinea pig’ when IV-bag ban goes into effect at UFC 192
When Jon “Bones” Jones was the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, it seemed as if nobody was going to defeat him. There are certain eras that mixed martial arts goes through and just as the “Dragon Era” ended with Lyoto Machida, Jones’ dominant reign temporarily concluded when he got stripped of the championship.
A lot has changed since “Bones” left the scene. The Ultimate Fighting Championship and United States Anti-Doping Agency partnered up to clean the sport. In doing so, they banned fighters from using IV-bags as a form of rehydration after the weigh ins. This change has caused several fighters to not only miss weight, but ultimately move up into another weight class. The change officially starts on October 1st, making October 3rd’s UFC 192 the first card where fighters will have to change their rehydration strategies.
UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier is a former Olympian and is no stranger to how USADA handles business. “I’ve been through all the USADA stuff,” said Cormier. “I’ve always competed with what God gave me. I think most fighters are happy with it, except the guys who have been cheating.”
When the IV-bag ban was announced, fighters within the promotion were not happy to say the least. Cormier is ready to play ‘guinea pig’, however, and set an example for the rest of the fighters in the company from here on out.
“We’re the first ones after it goes into effect on Oct. 1,” Cormier mentioned when asked about the IV bag ban. “We’re the guinea pigs. So we’ll see how much it changes things.”
Daniel Cormier will be putting his UFC Light Heavyweight Championship on the line against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 this Saturday.
