Eddie Wineland vs. Renan Barao set for UFC 165 in Toronto
The UFC’s interim bantamweight title will be on the line this September, as it was announced yesterday evening that interim champ Renan Barao (30-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will square off with Eddie Wineland (20-8-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in the co-main event of UFC 165 in Toronto, Canada.
Barao and Wineland were initially slated to headline UFC 161 in Winnipeg this past June, but a foot injury suffered by the champion caused the bout to be postponed.
Barao won the interim bantamweight title by defeating Urijah Faber at UFC 149 in July of 2012. He most recenlty defended his strap against Michael McDonald in England this past February, scoring a fourth round submission win over his very game UFC on FUEL TV 7 opponent.
Meanwhile, the former WEC 135-pound champion, Eddie Wineland, is currently riding a 2-fight win streak. Wineland became the first fighter to ever knockout Scott Jorgensen back in June of 2012, and then followed that up by out-pointing fellow contender Brad Pickett this past December.
UFC 165 takes place September 21 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event is headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon “Bones” Jones and challenger Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson.
