Frank Mir vs. Alistair Overeem added to UFC 167 in Las Vegas

By Chris Taylor - September 6, 2013

Yesterday evening, UFC officials confirmed that a heavyweight bout between former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir (16-8 MMA, 14-8 UFC) and former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem (36-13 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has been added to November’s UFC 167 event in Las Vegas.

Frank Mir most recentlty fought at last weekends UFC 164 event in Milwaukee. Unfortunately for Mir fans, Frank was TKO’d in the first round of his co-main event fight by opponent Josh Barnett. The loss marked Mir’s third in a row, as he suffered previous defeats to Daniel Cormier and Junior dos Santos.

Prior to his title fight with ‘JDS’ at UFC 146 in 2012, Mir had strung together three straight victories over Mirko Filipovic, Roy Nelson and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira respectively.

Meanwhile, former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, finds himself in what is likely a must win situation. After defeating former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in his octagon debut, “The Reem” has suffered back to back losses in his most recent efforts. At UFC 156 in February, Overeem took on Strikeforce import Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. After dominating “Bigfoot” throughout the first 2 rounds, Overeem got cocky and was eventually KO’d by Silva in the third. In August, ‘The Reem” returned to the cage to take on Hawaiin native Travis “Hapa” Browne. Once again, Overeem would prove dominant in the early going, but eventually would be on the receiving end of a fight ending KO delivered by “Hapa”.

UFC 167 takes place November 16 live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view, following the prelims which air on FOX Sports 1 and Facebook. The event is headlined by a welterweight title fight between champion Georges St. Pierre and contender Johny Hendricks.

The stacked UFC 167 card now includes the following bouts:

  • Georges St-Pierre vs. Johny Hendricks – Welterweight title fight
  • Rashad Evans vs. Chael Sonnen
  • Frank Mir vs. Alistair Overeem
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Rory MacDonald
  • Josh Koscheck vs. Tyron Woodley
