‘I Feel More Mexican Than Cain Velasquez!’
UFC 188 is fast approaching and we will soon see the return of UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez. Velasquez, of Mexican heritage, will be fighting in his home country for the first time in his career and will receive a ravenous ovation, but Fabricio Werdum doesn’t think his will be far off!
Werdum has moved his camp and visited Mexico several times in the months leading up to his championship bout with Velasquez this weekend and has told Combate that he actually feels more Mexican than Cain!
“I get a lot of messages from the Mexican fans on social networks,” Werdum said. “I’m really happy for them. I have been to Mexico over 20 times and, actually, I feel more Mexican than Cain.”
Werdum quickly changed the tone of the conversation and addressed rumors surrounding Velasquez’s injury and withdrawal from UFC 180. “I believe it was a strategy,” Werdum confessed. “He had an injury, sure, but it wasn’t urgent, he didn’t need to stop.
The injury sidelines Velasquez for almost two years and Werdum has since defeated Mark Hunt for the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship.
“Now we can see who the true champion is, because Cain Velasquez hasn’t fought in two years. I’m still here and I was here to beat him, he just didn’t show up. I feel like the champion and on June 13, there can only be one and it will be me.”
