Jon Jones Releases Official Statement Following Court Hearing
On Tuesday morning former UFC champion Jon Jones entered a courtroom and plead guilty to a felony charge of fleeing from a hit and run.
It was a part of a plea deal that Jones and his legal team agreed to. The judge heard what his lawyers had to say, then Jones spoke up and gave his own statement.
He said:
“I want to apologize to Ms. Sonnenberg’s team, all the officers who were involved that day, all the people who support me who I’ve embarrassed, my family, my supporters, mainly Vanessa Sonnenberg [the pregnant women he hit] and her family for all the heartache I must have put them through.”
“I am here to accept full responsibility for what happened, for my actions, and I’m just really hoping you guys can give me the opportunity to redeem myself.”
After hearing all of that the judge decided not to issue any jail time for the UFC fighter and instead handed him up to 18 months of probation. He is also ordered to compete 72 appearances, at local schools, gyms etc., to speak with kids about his life and the mistakes that he’s made.
After the hearing Jones released an official statement on the matter, read if below:
“With regards to today’s decision made by the court, I am very happy to now be able to put this incident behind me. My actions have caused pain and inconvenience in the lives of others and for that I am truly sorry and I accept full responsibility. I have been working hard during this time away from my sport to grow and mature as a man and to ensure that nothing like this happens again. I have learned a great deal from this situation and I am determined to emerge a better person because of it. I apologize to those who were affected by my actions in this incident and I am hopeful that I will be given the opportunity to redeem myself in the eyes of the public, my family and friends as well as my supporters. I am not sure what the future holds for me but I plan to continue to do the work needed to be productive and successful in every aspect of my life.”
