Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira Set for March Event, Not UFC 169
After what appears to be a minor mishap by a trigger-happy UFC PR team, the news that Jon Jones (19-1) will defend his light-heavyweight title against Glover Teixeira (22-2) is false.
UFC president Dana White revealed today that it was in fact a mistake that his PR team announced the bout for that date and venue:
“Jones vs. Teixeira is not happening on Super Bowl [weekend],” White said. “Our people f**ked up and put that out when they shouldn’t have put that out, because that was never, ever even a done deal. Our P.R. team jumped the gun on that one.”
No word on a new location or specific day for that March 2014 date but as Dana White said, the initial February date just doesn’t work out:
“It’s not that [Jones] did or didn’t want it. It didn’t matter one way or the other with him. It was just something that didn’t work out.”
A separate announced bout between Alistair Overeem (36-13, 1 NC) and Frank Mir (16-8) has been set for that card and seems to be official according to the UFC, no word, however, on where that bout will take place on the card.
UFC 169 takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on February 1st, during Super Bowl weekend.
