Lawler: Hendricks and I need to figure it out in a trilogy fight
The UFC’s plan was to have to Rory MacDonald face the winner of this past Saturday’s UFC 181 main event bout between Robbie Lawler and Johny Hendricks.
However, Lawler vs. Hendricks 2 ended up being such a close fight that now a lot of fans and media members have stated their desire to see a thrid and deciding rubber match between the pair of welterweight sluggers.
UFC president Dana White appeared on FOX Sports 1’s post-fight show, and was asked if MacDonald’s title shot is still guaranteed:
“I have no idea,” said White. “The trilogy wouldn’t be a bad idea. We’ll see what happens.”
The newly crowned UFC welterweight champion of the world, Robbie Lawler, recently appeared on Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show, and said he is favor of the trilogy fight:
“It’s starting to sink in a little bit,” said Lawler, as transcribed by C.J. Tuttle. “I went to the gym and everyone was excited. The whole place was chanting. It’s awesome to be a part of it. I would like to relax, but obviously I want to work on some things and get better as a fighter. I would like to have some time to spend with my family, so I want to fight again maybe in late May, June or July. The bosses might have something to say about that, so we will see what happens.”
“I always believed in myself and believed I was capable of doing great things and winning world titles, but first you have to get to those positions. It was definitely tough during the down times to believe in yourself, but I just kept trying to get better and that’s what I did. I never gave up and never made excuses.”
“I’m very confident in my skills and think, if we fought again, I would win. Johny is a hell of a fighter, a hell of a competitor, and I look forward to meeting him again. Now that we have each won one apiece – and they were close fights – I think we need to figure this one out.”
Lawler is also game if Rory MacDonald is named his opponent:
“If the bosses think that makes sense and that’s the fight everyone wants to see I’m sure they will make it happen,” he said. “But I’m just relaxing right now. I’m not even thinking about that. I’m sure Dana, Lorenzo, Joe, and Sean will put their heads together and we will see what happens.”
