Marquardt’s Coach Was ‘Cursing Out Everybody’ Trying to get Fight Stopped Sooner
Nate Marquardt had a rough time adjusting to the altitude in Mexico City, Mexico during his fight with Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 188. Marquardt was getting roughed up badly before his corner ultimately waved the fight off before the third round could start.
Apparently, his corner-man Trevor Wittman was trying to stop the fight BEFORE the end of the second round. “He was really just defending,” Wittman told MMAFighting. “He was taking punches. I tried to stop the fight in the second round. There was a few guys in my corner from the commission, there was one guy from the UFC and I said, ‘Stop the fight.’ And they were like, ‘Sorry, no one can stop the fight but the referee or the doctor.’ That’s what they told me. So, I started freaking out… I was cursing out everybody.”
Wittman got so emotional that he actually jumped on the elevated portion of the cage where the camera-men film the fights. Officials had to pull him down, apparently, because he was blocking the audience’s view of the action. This only enraged Wittman more. “I’m screaming,” Wittman said. “I’m like, ‘Where’s the doctor, where’s the f*****g doctor? Stop the fight.'”
