Heading into tonight’s UFC Fight Night 57, many fans have wondered where Matt Wiman has been for the last two years.

Wiman, a UFC vet of 14 fights with a 9-5 record under the UFC banner, hasn’t been in the Octagon since January of 2013, nearly two years ago, when he lost to TJ Grant.

He spoke to MMAJunkie to discuss his hiatus from the sport, as well as his bout against Issac Vallie-Flagg tonight in Austin Texas.

“I just wanted to take some time to lick my wounds and maybe get some surgeries to start fixing my body up a little bit…I’ve ignored them for a while,”

“Often times, you take a little time off for some reason; maybe you come back to the basics a little more, but sometimes when I don’t train for a while, I pick it up a lot better, maybe because I’ve been trying new things and over-thinking things, but sometimes if you take time off and regroup, you come back and you’re better.”

“That being said, you need time in the gym to advance your skills. You have to spend your time in the gym, but you also have to think outside the box and regroup sometimes.”

Will Wiman be able to return as dominant as he was before he left? We will find out tonight on Fox Sports 1!
