Officials Kept Marquardt’s Coach From Stopping The Fight Sooner

“Taking needless damage is not good in this sport. The damage is when it affects your sharpness and the way you perform, and to see him take punishment, that’s longevity and him having kids.”

That’s what Nate Marquardt’s coach Trevor Wittman told MMAJunkie about throwing in the towel for his fighter on Saturday night when he was getting battered by Kelvin Gastelum.

Wittman said he tried to do it earlier, by standing on the cage apron, which is a boxing move that means stop the fight, but the officials told him to stop.

“Ultimately, that’s my job as a coach – to protect my athlete.”
