Sonnen To Title Hopefuls! ‘You’re Not a Champ, You’re a Punk for Taking Jones’ Belt’

The UFC Light Heavyweight Championship is being held in abeyance after Jon Jones was stripped of the title and suspended due to a recent run-in with the law. Jones was not fired from the UFC, and his status remains unclear. It is not known whether he will have to build his way back up or if he will get a title shot right away.

What HAS been confirmed is that Anthony Johnson will now be facing Daniel Cormier at UFC 187 for the vacated championship.

Regardless of how Jones’ situation is handled, Chael Sonnen thinks that the next champion shouldn’t feel too proud for winning the title after it was vacated. On his podcast “You’re Welcome“, Sonnen said, “Guys want to see Jon Jones stripped and then they want to fight for a title? But you don’t cut him so he’s still in the league. You know he can beat you. You know he’s the undefeated champion. You know he’s the best fighter out there.”

Sonnen later stated, “If Jon Jones stays in the division and you accept a title while he’s still in the division and you didn’t beat him, you’re a punk. You’re a punk! I would never put a belt around my waist knowing the guy five feet away from me is the true owner of it.”
