UFC 181 Results: Eye Poke Aids Faber In Submission Win Over Rivera
Well, that was unfortunate.
Francisco Rivera did an amazing job at standing his ground and not giving Urijah Faber much to work with. Faber’s head and foot movement keeps his opponents backing up and guessing when Faber is going to shoot, but Rivera did not fall for it today and actually got the best of Faber in the opening round in the striking department.
Faber landed an eye poke early on in the second round that led to the end of the fight. Referee Mario Yamasaki missed the eye poke and did not halt the action. As a result of this, Rivera stumbled back in pain and bounced off the fence in pain allowing Faber to lock in a modified rear naked choke. In pain from the eye poke and the rear naked choke, Rivera had no choice but to tap out.
Upon replay review, it was clear that an eye poke caused the fight to end sooner rather than later. Faber did not offer a rematch in the post-fight interview.
