UFC 186 Results: Hometown Boy Cote Beats Riggs in Decision
Patrick Cote fed off the energy of the Canadian crowd in the opening round and you could tell he was fired up to fight. Cote took Riggs down several times in the first and looked to be in full control of the bout, but an unimpressive second round threw the crowd off guard and Riggs was in position to run away with the fight in the third.
By the time the final round came around, it was Riggs who was coming out on top of the grappling scrambles. Riggs landed a takedown and flipped into mount with an impressive transition. A panicking Cote gave up his back in the process of trying to make it back to his feet but Riggs locked in the hooks and threatened a rear naked choke.
Then, Joe Riggs lost everything he worked so hard for in this fight.
Cote spun around into the guard of Riggs and started making it rain elbows and fists. Riggs took a beating for two minutes until Riggs was able to finally turn the tables one final time to land a few strikes before the time expired.
Cote utilized octagon control and dictated the pace of the fight whereas Riggs came out on top randomly. The strategy from Cote’s gameplan likely is what won him the decision in his hometown.
Patrick Cote def. Joe Riggs by way of Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
