Charles Oliveira moving and ‘alert’ after injury at “UFC Fight Night 74”
Charles Oliveira walked into the octagon at “UFC Fight Night 74” ready to prove that he was top-five material in the featherweight division, but instead fell victim of a freak injury.
His main-event bout with Max Holloway did not go as expected as it ended in less than two minutes. After some back and forth action, Oliveira shot for a takedown which Holloway successfully fought off. As Oliveira made it back to his feet, he quickly clutched his shoulder and neck and proceeded to back up against the fence. In fighting mode, Holloway smelled blood and began to charge but could tell something was wrong.
The referee waved the fight off after Holloway landed two soft shots which led to a scary moment. Oliveira was asked to remain on the ground by doctors as they tested what was wrong with him. Commentators Jon Anik and Brian Stann mentioned that it may have been a pinched nerve while Michael Bisping suggested it was a stinger.
Managing Director for UFC Operations in Canada Tom Wright supplied some positive news during the post fight press conference:
“Charles was immediately transported to the hospital. He was alert. He was able to move all of his extremities. We are waiting for any updates that we’ll get and as soon as we hear them, we’ll be able to tell you.”
