UPDATE: Jon Jones released from jail on $2,500 bail
Just a few hours after surrendering to authorities, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones is already out of jail.
Jones posted $2,500 bail on Monday evening and was released shortly after 10pm, this according to Bernadillo County Metro Detention Center (MDC) release records.
On Monday Jones, who is expected to defend his title against Anthony Johnson in the headlining bout of next month’s UFC 187 pay-per-view event, was arrested on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury.
The incident occured early Sunday morning when a 25-year-old pregnant woman’s vehicle was struck after a silver Buick SUV ran a red light, which caused the vehicle to hit a third car. A man matching “Bones” description ran from the SUV before returning, grabbing a handful of cash and fleeing again, this according to witnesses.
The victim was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. However, after a medical exam, police confirmed the woman had suffered a broken arm, which elevated the charge to a felony.
An off-duty police officer identified Jones at the scene. Paperwork belonging to Jones was also found in the 2015 silver Buick SUV, as was a marijuana pipe with marijuana inside of it.
The UFC released a statement on Sunday saying it was “aware” of the situation, but would “reserve further comment until more information is available.”
