Vitor’s Coach: ‘It’s Time to Stop Doubting Chris Weidman’
Chris Weidman addressed his haters after his successful UFC Middleweight Championship defense this Saturday at UFC 187. “This is your last invitation, come join the team.” Weidman made quick work of Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort when he defeated him in just one round, and it looks like “The All American” made a believer out of Belfort’s coach Gilbert Burns.
“Weidman is tough and there’s a reason he beat Anderson and Lyoto. Like he said, it’s time to stop doubting him,” Burns told Combate. “Weidman was in that same position with Anderson Silva and Demian Maia and neither of them could do anything. People can doubt Vitor’s jiu-jitsu, but not Demian’s.”
Burns mentioned that Belfort not only started out the fight well, but he also did the best out of anybody that has faced Weidman so far. Belfort landed a flurry of punches in the opening minute that caused Weidman to defensively cover up for several seconds before he fired back with shots of his own.
“Vitor started out really well, we knew Weidman would be slow in the beginning, which did happen, because he didn’t land anything.” Burns said. “Vitor connected his strikes well, but all the merit goes to Weidman, who survived the pressure and took Vitor down in the precise moment. He positioned himself well, hit hard and got the mount with two minutes and a half to go, which solidified his win.”
