White: ‘Jacare vs. Weidman Probably Next, But Rockhold is Top Contender’
After Chris Weidman’s successful defense of the UFC Middleweight Championship at UFC 187, there seems to be a bit of a log jam when it comes to the top of the division. With Vitor Belfort out of the picture, middleweights Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Luke Rockhold have been lobbying for a title shot.
Dana White acknowledges both fighters’ stance, and offers very little clarification when it comes to who is next in line.
“It took me so long to get here because Luke Rockhold had me in the hallway,” White told Fox Sports 1 after UFC 187. “Luke Rockhold said, ‘Do not give this fight to Jacare. Jacare isn’t going to try to come in and do what I’m going to do. You saw what I did to Machida. That’s exactly what I’m going to do to Weidman. Me and Weidman will go after each other. It’ll be a stand-up fight. We’ll do this, we’ll do that. Let’s do this thing in Las Vegas.'”
Rockhold is right; He was able to dominate Lyoto Machida in a fashion that Chris Weidman had failed to do. While White agreed that Rockhold was the top contender in the division, his next statement led to some confusion.
“So Jacare’s manager hit me right after the fight and said, ‘We’re ready for Chris Weidman,’ so it’ll probably be Jacare vs. Weidman next. I don’t know. Anything can happen. We’ll see how this thing plays out. Luke Rockhold is obviously the No. 1 contender. We’ll see what happens.”
Dana White has quite the situation to sort out. Who do you think is the rightful top contender?
