Will a star emerge in a UFC women’s flyweight division?
With the UFC finding great success with the female divisions particularly with Ronda Rousey, Dana White has recently told media that the next division to be added for the women will be the 125-pound flyweight class. No date has been set as to when the division will make the debut to MMA’s premiere promotion yet. With the record-breaking attendance event at UFC 193 featuring two women’s championship bouts, you can count that the UFC is looking to open up the division soon to capitalize on the market demand and build new female stars.
Popular UFC bantamweight Miesha Tate has previously expressed an interest in dropping down to 125-pounds, which could help to build a draw to the division. Another prospect for the division is Invicta FC flyweight champion Barb Honchak, who is on a nine-fight winning streak that goes back over five years. However, Honchack has just fought once in the last year at Invicta FC 9, questioning the future of her career.
While White and the UFC look to build the new division, adding weight classes and dominant champions, there lays the potential to set up superfights that fight fans clamor over. Champion versus champion bouts are always highly debated amongst experts and fans, but the actual fights hardly come to fruition. A big reason why only Randy Couture and BJ Penn are the only UFC fighters to win championships in two different weight classes. However, when the fights do come together, they have the draw to always pull big numbers, which is exactly what the UFC loves to do.
